Mike:
Sorry, we'll try again here - My wife and I also got back on May 17th from EDR for our honeymoon. We had read alot of negative reviews but decided to go with the place because of some very positive ones.
We loved this place and did not want to leave! The resort is beautiful and the service is outstanding. The service staff was very well trained; as a restaurant manager, I know good service. I wish we could be pampered by these folks at the restaurants we dine at in Austin. They try very hard to please ,and never seem to be expecting a tip(we did anyways). I literally had to chase the room service guy down the stairs to give him some money.
The food is, overall, very good. I would recommend upon arrival you resist the urge to hit the beach and make reservations at the Italian and Mexican restaurants. Both were very good; Ernesto @ the Italian provided some of the best service I have ever recieved in my life. There are some things that are kind of funky; you are in Mexico.
The waitstaff wore hairnets and the kitchen staff wore surgeons masks. We did NOT get sick.
I recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away from it all.We did talk to a couple who got married there and said everything was perfect.
I will go back.

: : That TOTALLY sucks that you got treated so crappy there. My brother and his wife went there when it first opened (spa not even available) and all of the waitstaff came from hotels that DID accept tips and so the only people who got good service and/or strong drinks were the ones tipping. (even though it is all inclusive and you aren't supposed to tip). It sounds like the place hasn't changed a bit.

:
: : : FYI! My girlfriend and I just returned from EDR on 3/5/01 and they are screwing people left and right.
: : : It seems they "lost" all of their reservations and by the time they found them they had seriously overbooked the resort. Now they are meeting people at the airport and sending them to stay in other resorts for a day or two before they will put you up. They put us and six other couples up at the Omini in Cancun for the first night we were there. Then, the van that was supposed to pick us up in the morning only had room for 10 people. How they could do this when they knew how many people they sent out there, I don't know. We spent a half an hour arguing with the van driver that we wouldn't ride on the floor of the van - go figure. After jumping in a taxi - which the resort grumbly paid for - we arrived to a lobby full of angry pissed off people, no champagne greeting, NO greeting at all.
: : : People with Casita reservations had to downgrade until a Casita came open. Some people with a Mini suite or regular room had to stay in their "holding" rooms with no view of the ocean at all. The resort tried to pacify people with $150 certificates (per room) to the spa, but it turned out that all spa services were booked by the time we got there. Not only that, but the resort was so full that all dinner reservations were booked as well (I think we got a 6 pm at the Mexican restaurant). The worst part of all of this was not that the resort screwed up, but their nonchalant attitude and inability (or caring) to compensate for this absolute mess. I have more but I feel like I'm rambling. The resort is beautiful, but it hardly makes up for the lack of service and unprofessional attitude of the staff. If you are leaving for the EDR, CALL YOUR TRAVEL AGENT TODAY and have them check on this terrible situation. You might even want to consider changing your plans.
: : : Sorry for the bad news.
