Personally I stay at Alicia's Bed and Breakfast. Can't get a better price than $35/night for a room with breakfast included. Spotlessly clean, residential area, private bathroom, a/c, ceiling fans, and beds or hammocks for sleeping. Great people and with the money saved, you can rent a vehicle for part or all of your stay.

There are great reviews of Playa Azul on the Travelnotes board. Check them out. I've been to the Playa Azul Beach Club on the adjacent property and the hotel looks very nice. It's small and people say it's clean and comfortable. I've never heard anything bad about it. The beach at the club next door is sandy, but small. I haven't found the best snorkeling there, but the beach excels in all other respects.
