I was looking for a cheap way to go to Cozumel in July. I found that going through a travel agent and getting a package deal was the most economical. Flying out of Detroit, rt air only on a scheduled flight ranged from $750 to $850 or thereabouts. Using a charter (Travel Charters) I could get that same rt air only for $466. By booking a package, we could stay at Casa del Mar for $566 for 7 nights. That's about as a cheap as you can get for a hotel. Casa del Mar is rated 2 or 3 stars in the travel books. We found it to be clean, friendly, and functional. We had no trouble with staff, a/c, or bathroom facilities. The room was small but not ridiculous. We had a view of the tennis court, but other rooms had better views. We just didn't care. It is across the street from the ocean with a bridge access. There are chaise lounges and palapas on the beach. The pool is on the hotel side of the street. It is shallow with a volleyball net, swim up bar, and many chaise lounges. The restaurant is nice. I would stay there again.
You might want to read my trip report. It's not on the current board, but can be accessed by clicking just below the picture where it says August 10/99. It is at the bottom of the page and called Trip Report 1.
I know there are other inexpensive places to stay, but not every hotel is offered as part of a package. San Miguel Sun Village is right on the square downtown and puts you right in the middle of all the action. It's offered with Apple Tours, but we found that in July Travel Charters is cheaper.
Just remember that January won't be as cheap as July. I don't know how fares compare flying out of your local airport. Best of everything and I hope you find a place that pleases you.

: I'm going with my fionce' this Jan and we are looking for something on or close to the beach hopefully. how can you make reservations? also is there a way to get a cheap flight that anybody knows about? any of this information would be much appreciated!! thank you very much! Kyle Landwehr.
