Re: Going to Cozumel......A few QuestionsPosted by Trudy on January 06, 2001 at 18:32:33: In Reply to: Re: Going to Cozumel......A few Questions posted by Deb on January 06, 2001 at 11:30:59: : : We are thinking of going to Cozumel....What's the best time to go, what hotel would you recommend, activities, a nice safe dive shop-Not a cattle operation, and anything else that you think might be helpful. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!! : : : We like the Fiesta Americana and don't choose the AI plan. We enjoy eating out downtown at night. Lots of wonderful restaurants!!! The Fiesta Americana is south of town about 4-5 miles. We were with another couple and I think the taxi ride to town was about $10.00. We rent a VW during our stay which is well worth it for beach hopping or a quick run to the store. We used it some at night but mostly took taxis if we were drinking. Don't be afraid to venture out in Cozumel. Rented the VW at our hotel for most of our stay. I've also stayed at Fiesta Americana, but we stayed AI. I would recommend that you NOT stay AI on Cozumel. There are an abundance of nice, reasonably priced restaurants in town. Hotel restaurants run a bit more money. Fiesta Americana is 47 pesos ($5) one way to town for two people. I've stayed at Casa del Mar ($2.50 cab fare to town) ...which is only a two star hotel compared to Fiesta Americana's five star rating. (There are no world class five star hotels on the island...world travelers rate El Presidente as 3 or 4). I was worried about a two star place...fearing roaches and theft. We had no problems at all. It is a nice "divers" hotel. That means plain Jane rooms, with adequate facilities. Well worth the money. The gardens are spectacular and the service is decent. Our air conditioner could freeze you out in the hot hot July temps. It was wonderful...and cheap! lol I now stay at Alicia's Bed and Breakfast ($2.50 cab fare to town). It offers the best rate I have found. It is in a residential district with easy access to taxis. I like the family atmosphere and Chuco's wonderful breakfasts (included). It's more like a home away from home. I also choose to sleep in a hammock when I am there. That's not something I can do here at home. Very comfortable.
La Ceiba is a decent mid-range hotel. Sister to Casa del Mar. It's across the street and down a bit. It's rated higher and is a bit nicer. Playa Azul is getting great reviews on the board. It is a smaller, moderately priced hotel on the northern shore. Probably about $4 cab fare to town. Nice sandy beach with a beach club next door that draws locals. Also on the north shore is El Cozumeleno... getting good reviews. A bit more money though cuz it is all inclusive. Those are the places I would direct a friend to check out...depending on what they want. Oh yeah, and a NICE place for a little more money is El Presidente. It doesn't offer all inclusive, but most people really enjoy the wonderful service and nice beach.
